Greg Crawford On D-League Basketball

By Greg Crawford @wchoops   November 24th, 2012

OPENING NIGHT--- Easily the highlight of the season opening night of the 12th year of the D-League, was the great battle in Hildago, Texas, featuring the home court Rio Grande Valley Vipers taking on the visiting Bakersfield Jam.

It was a wild game, with not much defense, but some spectacular offense, led by some great dunks on both sides.

Despite a furious rally by the Vipers in the final three minutes, the Jam held on to win in the opener for both teams.

Renaldo Major, who hit several critical free throws in the fourth period, led the Jam in scoring with 20 points and also contributed six rebounds and three steals.

The Vipers were led on offense by Brian Butch who scored 14 points and just as importantly grabbed 15 rebounds.

Three games highlight the D-League schedule tonight.

Greg Crawford On D-League Basketball

Greg Crawford @wchoops covers D-1 basketball for Comcast SportsNet, and he also loves all basketball, that is why he started this blog for coverage of a league that get little, the NBA's D-League.

By Greg Crawford, November 20th, 2012
Great News: The NBA announced today that the it is partnering with Google/You Tube to bring 350 D-League games to the internet through live streaming. This is a huge step for the D-League and most certainly will increase exposure worldwide.

The partnership is also significant, in that it will be the largest internet video streaming of any professional league. Congrats to all concerned and what a great move.

Overtime: Love the fact the D-League will experiment this year with using three minutes for any overtime as compared the usual three minutes. Great move and it makes teams really have to get out the box quickly in any overtime game this season. I will keep you posted on the progress for sure. and twitter @crawfordspeaks or @wchoops

The D-League has always been exciting and I plan to write on it at this site, year around. So bookmark and check often for news, updates, opinion and everything else D-League right year.

Preseason---The D-League gets underway tonight with two preseason games, Austin @Rio Grande Valley and Erie @Tulsa. Of course preseason games are so important in the D-League as each team plays less games, than the NBA in their preseason and crtical decisions need to be made in a quick hurry.

Maine Red Claws---Maine, probably can't wait to get their season started, as of today, they will have not only the services of Kris Joseph, but also the Celtics number one pick and 22nd pick overall Fab Melo. Melo is a player that dropped lower in the 2012 NBA drop than many expected, so it will be interesting to see how the 7-footer out of Syracuse fares in the D-League. Lots of big time potential. The Claws open their regular season on November 30th at the LA D-Fenders.

Call Ups---For new followers of the D-Leauge and big time D-League fans, it is always important to refresh the call up rules and assigning players. Any NBA team call up players, anytime and as many as they want, but in assigning players to D-League teams, the only assign a player three (3) times during the season.

D-League Flavor---Great news for the D-League, as of the opening rosters of the NBA teams, 20 percent of the players had played in the D-League. Pretty good I would say and that number will increase as the season goes along for sure.

Showcase---Once again the D-League Showcase will be hosted by the Reno Bighorns, in Reno, Nevada, January 7-10, 2012 and this is an awesome event and I will be there for sure, evaluating all the teams.

Keep reading, much more to come and appreciate your comments and support of this site. or twitter @wchoops
